What are transponder or chip keys?
The simplest answer is that transponders are an electronic/ computerized system that deters and prevents vehicle theft.
The use of transponder or chip keys (a transmitter chip that is housed in the key, a corresponding responder found in the vehicles “computer”), dates as far back as the mid-nineties.
Today, in almost every make and model of private vehicle (automobile, motorcycle and even some marine and recreational crafts) you will find a transponder system of one variety or another.
When these keys are lost or broken their replacement not only requires the mechanical key to be cut, they also require a chip to be programmed into the vehicles computer.
Some of these keys can be copied. If you only have one transponder key we highly recommend getting a spare key made, as having an existing key copied and programmed is far more affordable than the expense of having a key cut and programmed from scratch.
